It is the most common cancer among Canadian women, and the<sup>2nd<\/sup> leading cause of cancer death. Some 80% of new cases of breast cancer occur in women aged 50 and over. As October is dedicated to raising awareness of breast cancer, it&#8217;s also a time to remind women of the importance of screening and how to prevent it.   <\/p>\n<h2>Prevention is better than cure<\/h2>\n<p>There are a few simple things you can do to help prevent breast cancer. First, watch your<strong>alcohol<\/strong> intake, because even a small amount (one drink a day) can increase a woman&#8217;s risk of breast cancer. Alcohol reduces the amount of certain essential nutrients that protect against cell damage.<strong>Obesity <\/strong>increases the risk of breast cancer.<strong>Physical inactivity <\/strong>and <strong>smoking<\/strong> are also linked to breast cancer in women. The program invites them to undergo breast cancer screening mammography every 2 years. A letter of invitation sent by mail constitutes the prescription, and contains information on the Program and how to book an appointment at one of the designated screening centers (CDD) by region. For women under 50 and over 69, depending on their personal risk, the physician may prescribe a screening mammogram or other relevant medical examination.
