COPD is a progressive lung disease characterized by airway obstruction that develops over the long term. The main causes are smoking and exposure to air pollutants, but genetic factors may also play a role.

The most common symptoms of COPD include:

  • Persistent cough
  • Frequent expectoration
  • Shortness of breath, especially on exertion
  • Reduced physical capacity

It is essential to differentiate between COPD and asthma. Although both conditions share certain respiratory symptoms, COPD is characterized by persistent and progressive airway obstruction, unlike asthma, which is generally intermittent and reversible. Moreover, COPD is often diagnosed after the age of 40, and is also strongly linked to smoking.

Treatment and prevention

Although COPD is a progressive disease, there are treatments available to relieve symptoms and improve lung function, such as bronchodilators, corticosteroids and pulmonary rehabilitation programs. In addition, vaccination against influenza, pneumococcus and respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) is particularly recommended to avoid respiratory complications.
