What exactly is overdiagnosis?
Overdiagnosis occurs when a condition or anomaly is detected that would never have caused symptoms, complications or actual health problems in the course of a lifetime. In other words: something is found… that didn’t need to be found.
This phenomenon is well documented by initiatives such as Choosing with Care which encourage more thoughtful, evidence-based medicine.
What are the risks of overdiagnosis?
Unnecessary diagnosis can lead to a cascade of effects: additional tests, unnecessary treatments, side effects, stress and anxiety.
For example, screening for prostate cancer in a 30-year-old man with no risk factors can lead to invasive investigations… with no proven benefit. Today’s medical profession is in agreement: more tests do not always mean better health. Each test prescribed must be personalized and adapted to the patient.
Prevention, yes – but with discernment
Prevention remains essential. It enables us to detect silent diseases early and act before they progress. But good prevention is targeted, personalized and justified.
Multiplying tests “just in case” can dilute the benefits of prevention and expose you to unnecessary risks. The aim is not to test for everything, but to test for what’s relevant to you.
So when should you consult?
Consultation is always appropriate when you have symptoms, a family history, risk factors or simply questions. A well-conducted health check-up can help determine which screening tests are indicated… and which are not.
At LeBlanc + Savaria, we make sure…
… offer you tests based on the best medical recommendations, your age, your history and your reality. No test is done automatically. Every decision is considered, explained and discussed with you.
A word from Dr. LeBlanc
In medicine, our role is not to test everything, but to judge everything. Intelligent prevention is protection without excess.
