What is the role of the liver?

The liver is an essential organ: it filters blood, eliminates toxins, stores energy, helps digest fats and produces vital proteins. In short, it transforms what you eat and drink into fuel for your body, while ensuring its safety.

Fatty liver? Hepatic steatosis, or “fatty liver”, is now a veritable epidemic.

It affects a growing number of people in our modern societies. It’s called an “epidemic” not because it’s contagious, but because it’s very common and often silent, linked to diet or overweight. The good news? It can be treated and even reversed, especially when detected early.

How can I look after my liver?

Liver loves :

  • A balanced diet rich in vegetables, fruit and fibre and low in sugars and saturated fats
  • Regular physical activity
  • Maintaining a healthy weight

The liver doesn’t like it:

  • Alcohol
  • Certain natural products and medications taken without prior medical advice
  • Detox cures for the liver (it detoxifies itself)

With these simple steps, your liver can regenerate and continue to perform its many vital functions.

When to consult? What to look out for

The liver is discreet: it can become fatigued without causing any obvious symptoms. Signs to watch out for include: persistent fatigue, pain in the upper right quadrant of the abdomen, jaundice, swelling of the abdomen, or abnormalities detected during blood tests.

Screening is often carried out by blood analysis and ultrasound, enabling action to be taken before complications arise.
