What is CNESST coverage?

The CNESST (Commission des normes, de l’équité, de la santé et de la sécurité du travail) is the organization responsible for managing industrial accidents and occupational diseases in Quebec.

Who is the CNESST consultation for?

This service is for people who :

  • suffered an injury or accident at work
  • must consult a physician to open a new CNESST file
  • need a formal medical assessment related to their work-related accident

When an accident or injury occurs at work, a medical consultation is required in order to :

  • assess medical condition
  • officially open a CNESST file
  • fill out mandatory medical forms

Our medical team takes charge of the entire process, to offer you a simple, clear and reassuring experience.

Examples of situations covered by CNESST

  • Back pain after lifting a load at work
  • Falls in the workplace
  • Injury while using work equipment
  • Sprains, strains or work-related trauma

CNESST management procedure

1. Medical consultation with a general practitioner

You meet with a doctor, who takes note of the event that occurred at work and your symptoms.

2. Assessment of injury or condition

The physician conducts a complete clinical evaluation of the injury or condition related to the work accident.

3. Completion of CNESST forms

The physician completes all the medical documentation required to open the CNESST file.

  • The forms are sent directly to CNESST by the physician.
  • A copy is given to you, so that you can forward one to your employer.

4. Medical recommendations

Depending on your situation, the doctor may recommend :

  • additional examinations
  • appropriate treatments
  • work stoppage or return to work with or without limitations

5. Medical follow-up, if necessary

If follow-up is necessary, the physician can ensure continuity of CNESST coverage.

Every visit :

  • the evolution of the injury is assessed
  • the required forms are completed
  • medical recommendations are adjusted as needed

A clear, reassuring medical approach

Our goal is to provide you with efficient CNESST management that complies with administrative requirements, while remaining focused on your health, safety and recovery.

We’ll guide you every step of the way, so you can focus on what’s important: your recovery and safe return to work.

Frequently asked questions

Can you take over a CNESST file already opened elsewhere?

In general, yes, except in cases of ongoing litigation or disagreement over the diagnosis.

Does the patient have to pay for the consultation?

Yes, we do not submit invoices to the CNESST; the patient must pay the full cost to the clinic and contact the CNESST for reimbursement.

Does the clinic manage communications with the CNESST?

The doctor completes the medical documentation required for the declaration and automatically faxes it to the CNESST. Subsequent administrative procedures are the responsibility of the patient and the CNESST.
