This summer, it’s vital to take care of our skin; against sun damage.
In Canada, basal cell skin cancer is the most common form of cancer. According to statistics, 1 in 8 Canadians will develop basal cell carcinoma in their lifetime, and around 7,500 new cases of melanoma are diagnosed every year. That’s why adequate sun protection is crucial to reducing the risk of developing skin cancer.
Here are a few tips for healthy skin all summer long.
Prevention and Protection
Prevention is key! Avoid exposure to the sun between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m., and stay in the shade. Daily use of a broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of at least 30 is essential. Choose a sunscreen that offers protection against both UVA and UVB rays, and reapply every two hours, especially after swimming or when perspiring heavily.
In addition to sunscreen, consider wearing lightweight clothing (long sleeves and pants) to protect you from the sun. Wide-brimmed hats and sunglasses with adequate UV protection are also recommended to protect your face and eyes from harmful rays.
Sunburn: What to do?
In the absence of adequate protection, sunburn can occur. In the event of redness, pain and a sensation of heat on the skin, it’s important to act quickly. Apply cold compresses to the affected area, keep well hydrated by drinking water, and use soothing after-sun moisturizers containing aloe vera or a bath with colloidal oatmeal to relieve discomfort. To reduce discomfort, you can take an anti-inflammatory such as Ibuprofen.
When should you see a dermatologist?
It’s important to consult a dermatologist if you notice any unusual changes in your skin, such as spots that change size, shape or color, sores that don’t heal, or moles that become asymmetrical or irregular. Regular screening by a dermatologist can help detect signs of skin cancer early and take the necessary steps for effective treatment.
